파이오니아 페스티벌. (Pioneer festival)

파이오니아 페스티벌은 볼스테이트가 있는 인디애나 먼시(muncie)에서 한시간 정도 거리인 헌팅턴(Huntington)이라는 마을에서 열리는 페스티벌이다. 

파이오니아 하면 개척자 아니겠는가.

그야 말로, 말 그대로, 개척자 축제 정도가 되겠다. 영국인들이 초기 미국을 개척했을때 그 때를 재현하고 즐기는 우리나라로 말로 번역을 하자면..  향토 축제? 

우리나라 축제에 비해 규모는 그렇게 크지 않지만, 

시골 축제 같은 흥겨운 분위기가 연출된다.

매년 9월 말에 열리는데, 나는 그 첫날인 9월 27일에 이곳을 다녀왔다.

The Forks of the Wabash Pioneer Festival, a celebration of Hoosier life in the mid-1800s, was founded in 1976 in Huntington, Indiana.

The Forks of the Wabash Pioneer Festival, a celebration of Hoosier life in the mid-1800s, was founded in 1976 by Jean Gernand, who taught home economics and family living at Huntington North High School. 

The festival is held each year on the fourth full weekend of September at Hier's Park, 547 S. Briant St., Huntington, Indiana. A full program is offered, rain or shine.

Proceeds from the festival are used to support local charities and historic preservation projects. The festival hours are Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. An old-time worship service is offered at 9 a.m. Sunday before the festival opens. A full program is offered, rain or shine. We prefer the shine, though!

Admission is $3 for adults; $1 for students (includes college students with an ID); 5 and younger are free. Tickets are sold at the entrance gates. Ample free parking is available adjacent to the festival grounds.

일단 입장료로 성인은 3달라를 달라고 하는데, 보링한 이곳의 라이프를 생각해보면 그렇게 비싼 돈도 아닌 것 같고, 한번 정도는 가볼 가치가 있을 것 같다. 지금부터 사진을 한번 보시길 바란다.

입구에 들어가면 바로 보이는 전경이다. 

길쭉하게 늘어진 구조로,, 약 2시간정도는 돌아볼만 하겠다.

예전 미국인들이 먹었던 가정용 설탕 캔디, 뭐.. 엄청 달았음.

축제에 먹거리가 빠질수 없지. 

여기도 사람들이 둘러 앉아 먹거리를 먹는데... 

이 축제에서  일어나는 것은 모두 과거 개척자 시대를 재현한 것이라, 

나무를 떼어서 고기를 굽는다.

옛날 방식으로 옷을 입고, 조리를 하고, 대장장이 질을 하는 모습이 무척 흥미로웠음.

100년이 훨씬 넘은 증기기관. 실제로 잘 작동 하더군.

마력도 굉장히 쎄고... 지금도 엄청난 파워를 자랑.
